What will it take for you to become self-sufficient?
Participating in the Family Self-Sufficiency Program (FSS) means
that you will consider the above question, and think it through. It
means that you will make a 5 Year Plan* which will lead you and your
family to being completely self-sufficient. You will make and complete
goals, and work towards becoming completely independent of all other
government assistance. Together with your FSS Case Worker you learn
what resources are available to assist you in your quest, and you
will determine how that plan will actually look During the time you
participate in FSS, you can have the opportunity to build up a special
Savings Account, which we call an Escrow. Once you sign your Contract
of Participation, we will keep track of when you increase your earned
income and begin to pay a higher rent portion. The difference or a
percentage of the difference that you then pay to your Landlord for
rent will actually be put into that Escrow account for you. Once you
complete FSS successfully, you may request the funds which have been
set aside for you, and then use them as you see fit. We just ask that
you use them in a manner which will aid you in remaining completely
self-sufficient. We look forward to working with you! *Though your
plan will be written in terms of five years, you may complete your
plan in less time. Also, there may be special, unforeseen circumstances
which will cause you to need an extension. Every family will have
their own plan of action, and we will work with you to help you in
every way that we can.
"You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience
in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the
thing you think you cannot do."
- Eleanor Roosevelt
